LP0175. HAPPY HUNTING, Original 1956 Broadway Cast, w.Ethel Merman & Fernando Lamas. Shaded Dog black label RCA LOC-1026.
“Ethel Merman, the darling of American stage and films in the '40s , retired from performing when she married her third husband in 1953. When HAPPY HUNTING was proposed for her, her new husband encouraged her to accept the role and she came out of retirement to prepare. Unfortunately, she clashed with her co-star, a movie idol of the era, and she became disenchanted with the project as a whole. After several revisions and a Philadelphia tryout, the show opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theater on 6 December 1956 and was generally panned by the critics who, nonetheless, loved ‘La Merman’. After 412 performances, it closed on 30 November 1967 to the mutual satisfaction of most of the participants.”
