CRITIC REVIEW:

“In 1929…On the recommendation of Clemens Krauss, the Viennese engineer Hermann May was entrusted [with] acoustical effects….[he then] indulged in a personal hobby: he smuggled microphones onto the stage and recorded selected moments of opera performances [beginning] in 1933 and continued unimpeded even after the 1938 Anschluss May worked with quite primitive methods and, with his equipment, was able to capture only segments of performances, lasting four minutes at best….Listening to all forty-eight discs in Koch-Schwann’s WIENER STAATSOPER set is a daunting but immensely rewarding task when undertaken a little at a time. The documents collected here abound in vocal riches for which the adjective ‘priceless’ seems appropriate for once….many excerpts fade out before a specific musical episode has concluded or, even more frustratingly, before fading back in, several measures or pages later. Thus the listening process becomes a sort of operatic coitus interruptus….the accompanying booklets contain artist and composer indices, along with a chronological list of performances, brief biographies, and artist photos….Koch-Schwann includes arias from a 1941 COSI by the visiting Bavarian State Opera, and these are the best of the Mozart selections.”
