"MATILDE had developed a ‘bad reputation’ as having a ridiculous comic plot and a tenor role impossible to cast. It languished unheard for many years until the 1996 Rossini Festival in Pasero staged the work. Bruce Ford was to have sung the ‘impossible-to-cast’ role, but withdrew. His replacement was the then 23-year–old Juan Diego Flórez, for whom the role was not ‘impossible’ but actually easy. He quickly established himself as the leading lirico-leggiero Rossini tenor of his generation. Having sung a wide range of Rossini tenor roles, Flórez returned to the role of the comic tyrant, Corradino, for the 2004 Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival, where this recording was made. Now he was an even greater sensation: the beauty of his voice, compelling rhythmic vitality, stunning ease of coloratura, high notes seeming to pop out of nowhere yet elegantly integrated into the vocal line, even a winning aural personality."
