Wilhelm Kempff (Hanssler 93.720)
P1026. WILHELM KEMPFF: Rameau, Couperin, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven & Schubert. (Germany) Hänssler 93.720, Live Performance, Schwetzinger Festepiele, 1962. - 4010276025917

“Wilhelm Kempff confirms his unique status in his Schwetzinger piano recital of 1962 – as he demonstrates his ability to connect a searching and dreamy pianistic approach to a wide-ranging repertoire. Unexpected, even for Kempff, better known for his interpretations of the major works of the piano repertoire, is the program he selected for this recital: miniatures of Jean-Philippe Rameau and François Couperin show Kempff as the sonic acrobat and mystic colorist, equal to the challenges of the French clavicenists – territory he previously explored only by way of Fauré. Altogether, three wonderful little piano tone-poems, full of fleeting fragrance, well articulated and evocative. For the ‘traditional’ part of his festival concert reveals Kempff as master of both Schubert’s lyric as well as passionate scores. The choice of the often overlooked, Beethoven’s two-movement Sonata in F Major, must also stand out as one of the unique features of this program, which also includes two rarities from Mozart and Handel.”
