CRITIC REVIEW: “The works collected here, except for the last, were recorded for Columbia in 1929, a high-water mark for things Parisian, and afford an opportunity to hear a great romantic performer in something like modern sound. The interpretations are big, bold, colorful, and passionate. Enescu’s performance of his Third Sonata, recorded about 1950, is particularly special, the work of an elderly wracked with pain performing with demonic intensity. The work itself, composed in 1926, is itself a thing of wonder, infused with Balkan soul and eastern harmonies. If you have the other works in other collections, you might consider seeking out this Japanese production for the sake of the Third Sonata.”
