V1716. MARIE GÖTZE: Songs by Schubert, van der Stucken, Hettersdorf, Wagner & Radecke; Arias from Orfeo, Samson et Dalila, Mignon, Carmen, Faust, La Dame Blanche, Le Prophète, Der Evangelimann, Il Trovatore & Aïda. (Germany) Truesound Transfers 3021, recorded 1901-11. Transfers by Christian Zwarg.
“Schumann-Heink’s breakthrough into leading rôles was provided when prima donna Marie Götze argued with the director of the Hamburg opera. He asked Ernestine to sing the title rôle of CARMEN, without rehearsal, which she did to great acclaim. Götze, in a fit of pique, cancelled out of the rôle of Fidès in LE PROPHÈTE, to be performed the following night, and was again replaced by Ernestine. Schumann-Heink replaced Götze as Ortrud in LOHENGRIN the following evening, again without rehearsal, and was offered a ten-year contract. Götze is perhaps best-remembered as créatrice of the rôle of Magdalena in DER EVANGELIMANN, then in the Berlin premières of the rôles of Herodias and Klytämnestra.”

“[Truesound] transfers have been an absolute revelation to me….Amazingly, Christian Zwarg has managed to unlock the sound of these recordings in such a way as to present [voices] such as I have never heard before. Here the sound has a sheen and glow which is quite beautiful. It is as if an old masterpiece painting has been cleaned and restored, allowing rays of brilliant light to emerge….”
