CRITIC REVIEW:

"Wilhelm Rode, a bass-baritone noted particularly for the roles of Sachs, Wotan and the Dutchman, was considered in the same class with Friedrich Schorr and Rudolf Bockelmann. A member of the Nazi party, he was selected in 1934 to be director of the Deutsches Opernhaus, the Berlin opera under Goebbels' supervision. Although not a strong manager, Rode maintained reasonably high standards of performance. Because of his political record, he retired at the end of the war."
