VRCS-2013. Transfers by Seth B. Winner.
“As always [with VRCS], everything about the production of this disc is exemplary. The presentation is of the very highest quality, with photographs and quite often with quite lengthy biographies of all the artists as well as full discographical details. The transfers by Seth Winner are state-of-the-art with vivid presence but almost no surface noise….there is not a single poor performance on the disc, and many which are excellent….Stella Power…is a singer who is almost forgotten and uncollected, but this performance of Carey’s ‘Spring Morning’ reminds us of what a very accomplished singer she was. The tone has a lovely, bright quality, the coloratura is very fleet and accurate and there is a splendid top F at the end…..clearly Lashanska inspired Lázaro to be on his best behaviour and both give most sensitive performances [of the unpublished final scene from AÏDA]. The final phrase is absolutely lovely….Seth Winner has coaxed extraordinarily good sound from [Joseph Schwarz’s] ‘Wie aus der Ferne’ [on Pathé] which he never recorded for either Parlophon or DG; his Pathés are the hardest of discs to find….this sounds as well as most 1911 recordings from any company….I was particularly struck by how much like a Marchesi pupil [Nordica] sounds [in] the unpublished ‘Mia piccirella’.”
