Jerome Mitchell, a true enthusiast, has published two books documenting traces of more than 80 operas based on Scotts works, most of them written in France and Italy in the first half of the 19th century. Scott was well suited to opera librettos precisely because his books were melodramatic and Romantic, filled with ingredients that worked well in opera of that period: heroines pure and suffering, strapping heroes, dramatic plot twists and plenty of local color. And few of the operas followed the original very closely.
