The Tenor of his Time - Edward Johnson (Ruby Mercer)
B1238. RUBY MERCER. The Tenor of his Time: Edward Johnson of the Met. Toronto, Clarke-Irwin, 1976. 336pp. Index; Discography; Photos; DJ. - 0-7720-07365

“A magnificent voice and matinee idol appearance propelled this boy, born in Guelph in 1878, into a career as an opera star in Italy under the name of Edoardo di Giovanni He then returned to America to a contract with the Chicago Opera in 1919, billed as Edward Johnson. In 1922 Johnson went to New York's Metropolitan Opera where he eventually became General Manager. It is a pity that Edward Johnson is likely to be remembered in history more as a General Manager at the Met than as a tenor. Records show a solid-lirico spinto voice used with great intelligence and a secure technique.”
