C1872. PAAVO BERGLUND Cond. London Phil.: Symphony #2 in D; Symphony #7 in C (both Sibelius). (U.K.) LPO 0005, Live Performances 2005/'03, resp., Royal Festival Hall. Long out-of-print, Final Sealed Copy! - 85499001055
"Taped at the Royal Festival Hall, this disc commemorates both the London Philharmonic's long association with the Sibelius and its more recent association with the veteran Finnish conductor Paavo Berglund. He has recorded the Sibelius symphonies three times before, but these performances generate excitement no studio version could capture. The Second is notable for its combination of epic sweep and wide swings of mood. The Seventh is a noble, harrowing achievement that attains remarkable spiritual and emotional depths.
Extraneous noise, however, can also be a peril in live recordings, and at one point you have to put up with Berglund getting carried away and excitedly shouting instructions to the musicians. The playing is exemplary in both cases."
