CRITIC REVIEW:

“First performed at the Theatre Royal in Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, in 1741, DEIDAMIA was Handel's last opera. In the last two decades of his life he channelled his dramatic instincts into the great sequence of oratorios, whose texts were in English rather than the Italian of the operas. Though it was written at the end of a period that also produced work such as ISRAEL IN EGYPT, SAUL and L'ALLEGRO, IL PENSEROSO ED IL MODERATO, DEIDAMIA is not a convincing piece of music drama. There are some good moments, the occasional flash of opulent pageantry - but far too much that is baroque opera by the yard. This is the first commercial recording.”
