CRITIC REVIEW:

“This is an opera that demands great voices and high voltage interpretation. It gets plenty of both in this performance. The recording is pieced together from performances that took place in Besançon and Rennes, evidence of the high quality of French provincial performances at this time. The burly-voiced baritone Pierre Nougaro as Marco is an impressive artist. In the quieter, more conversational passages, his vividly expressive enunciation is remarkably reminiscent of his great predecessor Vanni-Marcoux. Suzanne Sarroca, who sings the title role, is very thinly represented on commercial recordings. One can only wonder why. Here she sounds somewhat like the young Régine Crespin and offers a passionate and fresh-voiced performance….Even if an enterprising record company gets around to recording MONNA VANNA, it is highly unlikely we will ever hear it sung like this.”
