CRITIC REVIEWS:

“The standing of KÖNIGSKINDER in the Humperdinck canon has been well rehearsed. Compared with HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, it lacks popular appeal and is over-long, and yet it’s a work with some ravishingly beautiful music. It’s very much a fairy-tale for adults rather than for children.

Availability of complete recordings has been intermittent. Among commercially made recordings, the leader has generally been considered the 1976 version from Munich under Heinz Wallberg (EMI, 8/89 – nla), with Helen Donath as the Goose Girl, Adolf Dallapozza as the Prince and Hermann Prey as the Fiddler. Neither of two more recent versions has quite managed to displace it.

Whatever way one may choose to listen, both the opera and the recording richly reward investigation.”

- Andrew Lamb, GRAMOPHONE, Jan., 2012

“In the recorded legacy of KÖNIGSKINDER, the singing of Helen Donath as the Gänsemagd in the EMI recording conducted by Heinz Wallberg has never been surpassed for limpid, ethereal beauty of tone and disarming characterization. A performance of HÄNSEL UND GRETEL can survive a poor Gretel, as too many performances have exhibited, but KÖNIGSKINDER cannot be successful without an appealing Gänsemagd.”
