“Principal cast includes: Helen Traubel, William Johnson, Judy Tyler, etc. All songs written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Everybody knows Rodgers & Hammerstein's big hits, from OKLAHOMA! to THE SOUND OF MUSIC. This show, based on John Steinbeck's novel CANNERY ROW, was their biggest flop. The most popular explanation for the musical's failure is that Oscar Hammerstein II just wasn't comfortable with the low life of prostitution (however whimsically treated) Steinbeck had depicted. Nevertheless, the music was standard R&H, with songs reminiscent of SOUTH PACIFIC, especially, although none of them came to life outside the show.”

- William Ruhlmann, ROVI

“Helen Traubel had a beautiful voice that soared easily over any kind of orchestral surge, yet could be full of sweetness and lyricism….She became the most important person to the Met management [after Flagstad’s departure] who hoped to keep the lucrative Wagner music dramas in the repertoire; that was possible only as long as somebody was at hand to do the great female roles….Of course Traubel secured and got the willing and able assistance of Melchior, whose meal ticket was again safe with an Isolde and Brünnhilde around….”
