“For this listener, the Flonzaley Quartet is simply in a class by itself, probably the most homogeneous-sounding chamber ensemble in my experience. Their pacing, phrasing, and intonation are simply remarkable, and they sound almost like a string orchestra rather than four separate individuals. Although their album of romantic masterpieces [S0025] is also a ‘must buy’, it seems that the Flonzleys really show their abilities for subtlety and yet deeply emotionally-charged interpretations in these classical works, most especially the Beethoven Quartets. The Opp. 127 and 135 recordings are simply the best ever; they make the hallowed Budapast recordings from the 1940's seem businesslike and perfunctory by comparison. For an interesting comparison, I would suggest listening to the Opus Kura reissues of the Capet Quartet, especially in the Haydn ‘Lark’ Quartet, which both the Capet and Flonzaleys recorded; I find the Capet more overtly emotional, less blended, and with a definite predominance of the First Violin, and less secure intonation than the Flonzaleys.”

“The Flonzaley Quartet was the deliberate creation of Éduard J. de Coppet of New York, who in 1902 engaged the original members to devote themselves entirely to quartet-playing, and not with any view to giving regular concerts in public. The group took its name from de Coppet's summer villa near Lausanne, in Switzerland, where the four musicians first rehearsed. After a long period of practice, the Flonzaley Quartet made a European tour and won high praise for the perfection of its ensemble and its artistic finish.”
