“The German mezzo-soprano Marie-Luise Schilp enjoyed an excellent reputation during the 1930s and 40s. Until the early 1950s Schilp was one of the most sought-after soloists at Hessian Radio, where some of her best recordings were made. She retired to private life at a relatively young age, however, and all traces of her were subsequently lost. Marie Luise Schilp deserves to be better remembered. She was exceptional in one respect for not darkening her voice in the exaggerated manner that is so typical of mezzo-sopranos and altos. The brighter, natural quality of her voice makes the varied roles she played - from Cherubino and Octavian to Hänsel, Orlofsky and Feodor, from Dorabella and Carmen to Olga and Pauline - seem younger and more convincing than does the artificial vocal body of conventional altos. But she was also well suited to the numerous mother figures she played, roles for which her singing style gave greater nuance and shading. It is extremely unfortunate that most of the recordings she made for Hessian Radio were inexplicably erased, along with so many others in the early days of the stereo age. Irreplaceable documentation, not just of Schilp but of much of the early post-war years, was thus lost forever.”
