“The career of Édouard Rouard was typical of its time in the early twentieth century. Born in 1876, he went to Marseilles to study singing with Boudouresque who had been a member of the the Paris Opéra since its opening. After this basic training he appeared at secondary theatres where he learnt his metier and his repertoire. He was heard in Nimes, Nice and later at Lyons, then in Belgium at Liège and the Monnaie in Brussels. Gifted with a solid and wide ranging baritone voice, he made his debut at the Paris Opéra in 1912 (at the age of 36) and went on to have a career there of two decades, singing in the existing repertoire as well as new works. From the start Rouard made an impression as the High Priest in SAMSON ET DALILA. When HÉRODIADE entered the repertoire of the Opéra in 1921 he sang Hérod which became one of his best roles along with Athanael. Amongst the Verdi operas he sang in RIGOLETTO, LA TRAVIATA and IL TROVATORE. He was also an exceptional Guillaume Tell. Having created the role of Amfortas at the Monnaie in Brussels in January 1914, he took on the role ten years later at the Opéra and sang Wolfram the following year. Without being a Wagner specialist, he won a considerable success in these roles. A much rarer work at the time was CASTOR ET POLLUX which he sang at the Opéra in the revivals of 1930 and 1935, then in the same year in the Florence May Festival. In retirement he returned to his native cote d’Azur where he taught singing with skill and devotion. He died there in 1962. His phonographic legacy is important and reflects his position in the company of the Paris Opéra.”
