“Alexander Heinemann (1873-1919) was one of the top concert baritones of his time, hugely successful not only in Europe, but also in the USA. Although he never appeared in opera, he was invited to participate in several of the Met's Sunday Night Concerts, and President Taft invited him to sing at the White House.
Heinemann was one of the first singers to re-introduce the songs of the pre-Schubert generations of composers and on several occasions presented chronologically arranged song recitals to show how the form developed over the centuries, thus breaking with the old habit of opening a recital with a group of arias. He also was a very successful teacher at the Stern conservatory in Berlin. One of his pupils was the famous Verdi baritone Joseph Schwarz.”
