“Michael Raucheisen was a seemingly ubiquitous presence on the European concert scene in the first half of the twentieth century, not, however, as a soloist or recitalist, but as the foremost German accompanist to singers. As an innovation he played his accompaniments with the piano lid open, in order to obtain a better tonal balance between the voice and the instrument. He also served as accompanist to instrumentalists, such as composer/violinist Fritz Kreisler. Perhaps Raucheisen's most important contribution, however, was his development of a large edition of German lied, recorded mostly in the wartime era for Berlin Radio. His activity in the recording studio in the 1940s was remarkable for its broadness of repertory and skill in both the accompaniment and singing. The fact that about 50 or so of Raucheisen's recordings are still available gives testament to the heft of the pianist's legacy. Over one thousand songs have been compiled on sixty-six CDs, providing a comprehensive overall view of the genre. Included are exemplary recordings of the major song cycles DIE SCHÖNE MÜLLERIN, DIE WINTERREISE and DER SCHWANENGESANG by Franz Schubert as well as songs by Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Carl Loewe and Richard Strauss - and there are many works just waiting to be discovered, such as songs by Hans Pfitzner, Peter Cornelius and Heinrich Marschner. Incl. a book which supplies a wealth of information, including a comprehensive biography about Michael Raucheisen and biographical information about the edition's most important composers and performers. These historical recordings have been restored with the help of the latest technology and offer a good sound quality, without losing the warmth and charm of the originals. The book provides a wealth of information. The exquisite design makes this edition a ’must’ for all lovers of classical song.”
