“HEIRS AND REBELS is the title given to a book of letters between Holst and Vaughan Williams: ‘The heirs had come into their inheritance and the rebels had led a revolution of greater importance than they could guess’. The friendship between the two composers, perhaps the closest in musical history, was strong enough to withstand totally honest criticism, and Vaughan Williams was devastated by Holst's death in 1934. This release revives 78rpm recordings made by the composers' contemporaries which are now of both historical and musical interest.”
